DOJ rejects Zaldy's bid to turn witness

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Justice (DOJ) yesterday rejected an offer of suspended Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) governor Zaldy Ampatuan to become a state witness in connection with the Maguindanao massacre.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said Ampatuan, among those principally accused in the multiple murder case, lacks the qualification to become state witness.

AFP not alarmed by reports of China intrusions

MANILA, Philippines - China has not given assurance that it would cease intrusion into the Philippine territory in the disputed Spratly Islands, but the military said it is not alarmed because this is expected. “We expected that. How could they say that they are committing intrusion if they believe that the area is theirs?” Commodore Miguel Rodriguez, Armed Forces spokesman, said yesterday in an interview in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.

DILG expected to recommend sanctions on Duterte

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is expected to recommend sanctions on Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio for punching a court sheriff during a demolition on July 1.

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo said in a press conference that their investigation is not meant to file charges in the absence of a formal complaint from sheriff Abe Andres.

He said despite the absence of a formal complaint, the department conducted an investigation.

Johaira revealed her husband of 17 years will come clean on the carnage and testify against the “mastermind,” adding that he has already sent feelers to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for this intention.

MANILA, Philippines – Boxing promoter Bob Arum said the camp of Manny Pacquiao has agreed to random drug testing for the superfight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. to push through.

Arum said in an ESPN report that the Filipino boxing superstar agreed to random testing as long as it will be done by a neutral organization.

Saudi bars vacationing OFWs from returning

MANILA, Philippines - The government of Saudi Arabia has reportedly barred Filipino workers from returning to the kingdom after their vacation in the Philippines.

John Leonard Monterona, Migrante-Middle East coordinator, said they received reports that since last week Saudi immigration authorities have been stamping “exit only” on visas of departing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) going to their vacation in the Philippines.
